About Wakefield West Yorkshire

Wakefield is a market town in West Yorkshire, England, on the River Calder and the A638 road. Wakefield was dubbed the “Merrie City” in the Middle Ages, being home to such festival as May Games (or Ales) and Fassetide Sports. In olden times a corn exchange was established in the town centre and a livestock market at the Trinity Church yard. The Market Place has many stalls selling local produce, including breads and cheeses baked by small local bakeries. The town’s football team is called Wakefield Trinity Wildcats; it plays in the Super League Premiership division of British Association Football League.”

There are several museums in Wakefield including Queen’s Square Museum & Art Gallery which displays remnants of Roman occupation; Thornes House which houses exhibits on natural history and archaeology; West Riding Textile Museum which displays machinery and equipment used by manufacturers in the region; and Hepworth Gallery – now National Trust property – which houses works by sculptress Barbara Hepworth as well as paintings by Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore and David Hockney amongst others.

Wakefield’s status as a centre for brewing can be traced back to 1180 when monks from Pontefract Priory introduced hops to local brewing. Today breweries remain active in the town including Samuel Smith Old Brewery which produces traditional ales using coal-fired ovens.
